Comparing Concert Venues Across the DMV

“Are you going to the concert tomorrow?” is a phrase often overheard in the Stone Ridge junior cloak room, suggesting many different concert venues of different size, shape and variety throughout the DMV.

The Fillmore in Silver Spring and the 9:30 Club in D.C. are two popular venues that hold around 2,000 people and typically host artists who are well known but still launching their careers. They offer country to rap and everything in between for around $30 a ticket, and both venues are all general admission. Recently, Loren Giulieri, ’17, saw Halsey, an up and coming indie singer, at the 9:30 Club, which she thought was  “very cool and very edgy.” For further information, visit http://www.930.com/ or http://www.fillmoresilverspring.com/.

Midsize amphitheatres, such as Jiffy Lube Live and Merriweather Post Pavilion, draw a variety of acts that high schoolers enjoy. Jiffy Lube, which opened in 1995, holds roughly 25,000 people and is located 35 minutes outside of D.C. Artists, including Luke Bryan, J.Cole, 5 Seconds of Summer and Earth, Wind, & Fire, routinely play there. Although a bit farther than other venues, Jiffy Lube is beautiful, especially in the summer.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is one of the nation’s most beautiful and storied amphitheaters. It lies smack dab between D.C. and Baltimore, and artists such as Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and Janis Joplin have played here. The infamous Sweet Life festival is held here every spring. Both of these venues are a bit more pricey, typically ranging from $30-$80 per ticket.  They have a general admission pit, regular seating, and a lawn for their nearly weekly outdoor summer concerts. Olivia Mullaney, ’18, has attended 24 concerts in her lifetime. Her favorite venue is the 9:30 Club, because she “likes the vibe and it is easy to get to the front. It is also spacious, especially for a general admission venue. The security in the front is nice and not uptight like at some places.” If you want to follow in Olivia’s footsteps, take a look at just a few of the many upcoming concerts in the area.
