If you’ve gone out recently, you’ve probably seen teenage girls wearing those Adidas sneakers. Sneaker fashion is trending now more than ever. Celebrities, such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Zendaya, Rihanna, and many others, wear them essentially everywhere, from the gym to a casual lunch with a friend and even fashion shows. Sneakers are no longer just seen at an Equinox or at Bethesda Sport and Health.
Here at Stone Ridge, this sneaker trend has very clearly evidenced itself in the hallways. Maggie Quinn, ’17, is known in the Third Academic class for wearing her Adidas Super Star sneakers everywhere, because they are “more comfortable than most shoes, super trendy, and ultimately go with whatever your outfit is.”
Back in the day when basketball players wore what looked like spandex as shorts, fans admired their favorite players’ shoes. Converse All-Star shoes are often called “Chucks,” after 1920’s basketball star Chuck Taylor, who wore them and promoted them. Though that was 95 years ago, the Converse shoes are still extremely fashionable. Companies like Nike came out with the Air Jordans, which sold like crazy and surprisingly were not worn only to play basketball, but also worn casually in the streets.
It’s common knowledge that celebrities make a huge impact on how people dress. Celebrity style is seemingly contagious; when one person had the new, famous and very expensive S’well water bottles, the next person soon got one, and before you knew it, the water bottle graveyard quickly became the S’well bottle graveyard. If Kylie Jenner wears a shirt a certain way, you’ll soon see a crowd of girls wearing a shirt the same way. If a group of celebrities start wearing a certain shade of color, soon stores will start selling clothes of a similar shade.
In this case, sneakers have become a very trendy article of clothing. Some are much more expensive than others. Kanye West’s Yeezy’s are shoes that many people hoped to have and shoes widen eyes and open gaping mouths when seen out in public. Celebrities would post pictures of themselves wearing these shoes–and most were not on the way to the gym. Other shoes that have become quite popular these days are the Adidas Stan Smith’s, which, again, aren’t usually worn on a run; rather, you see people wearing them out to lunch.
In the Stan Smith’s case, the reason for their recent success was due to marketing. Starting around 2010, the production of the Stan Smith’s slowed down, making them seem exclusive to buyers. An event that helps not only Adidas but any clothing article are Fashion Weeks. The Stan Smith’s were worn in an important fashion show this past year, and before you knew it, buzz about those shoes appeared all over social media.
Eventually, these fashion trends die down, and people move on to the next big thing. Sneakers were trendy in the 80s, and their popularity died down a bit. But now, 30 years later, they have returned in full force. So if you haven’t gotten a pair of Converse or Adidas sneakers, no need to worry–they’ll remain trendy.
